Instruction with Sea Fever Sailing

Beyond certification,
into confidence

Good training should leave you with more than a certificate.

It should give you the confidence to make decisions, the judgement to adapt when conditions change, and the practical skills to take responsibility when there is no instructor standing beside you.

Whether you are stepping aboard for the first time, working towards an RYA qualification, building on skills you already have, learning aboard your own boat or developing your theory knowledge, Sea Fever Sailing will help you find the right next step.

Training that works
in the real world

Every sailor arrives with different experience, different ambitions and different areas of uncertainty. That is why our training begins with the person—not simply the syllabus.

We take time to understand where you are now, where you would like your sailing to take you and what will help you make meaningful progress.

You will be encouraged to get involved, think for yourself and take increasing responsibility. There is time to ask questions, practise properly and learn from the moments that do not go entirely to plan.

We do not believe in rushing people through manoeuvres or simply teaching them how to pass an assessment. We want you to understand what you are doing, why it works and how to apply it when the situation is no longer quite so straightforward.

Because that is when good training really matters.

Four ways to train with Sea Fever Sailing:

01

RYA Training

Recognised qualifications,
Taught the Sea Fever way

As an RYA Recognised Training Centre, we offer a practical route from your first experience as a crew member through to confident skippering and Yachtmaster preparation.

Our RYA training combines the structure of the recognised syllabus with more time, small groups and personal instruction. You will be actively involved in the sailing, with plenty of opportunity to take the helm, make decisions, practise manoeuvres and receive clear, constructive feedback.

The aim is not simply to complete the syllabus. It is to leave the boat feeling genuinely more capable.

02

Sea Fever Courses

Build on your qualifications—and close the gaps between them

A certificate tells you what you have achieved. It does not always mean you feel completely ready for what comes next.

Sea Fever Sailing Courses are designed for the spaces between formal qualifications: consolidating Day Skipper skills, preparing to move from coastal to offshore sailing or developing the experience and judgement that come after Yachtmaster.

These are practical, focused development courses for sailors who want time to reinforce their foundations, stretch themselves and turn knowledge into confident action.

03

Own Boat Tuition

Your boat. Your crew. Your ambitions.

Every boat handles differently. Every crew has its own way of working. Sometimes the most valuable training is the training that takes place aboard your own vessel.

Own Boat Tuition is shaped around you, your boat and the sailing you want to do. It can help you become familiar with a new boat, improve marina handling, understand your systems, prepare for a particular passage or help your regular crew work together more confidently.

Rather than adapting what you learn on somebody else’s yacht, you will develop practical skills using your own layout, equipment and handling characteristics.

04

Theory Training

Understand the thinking behind good decisions at sea

Practical confidence is built on strong foundations.

Our Theory Training will help you develop the knowledge behind safe, capable sailing—from navigation, pilotage and tides to weather, passage planning and the decisions that bring all of those elements together.

Theory will be offered through shorebased courses, online learning and personalised one-to-one tuition, giving you the flexibility to learn in the way that works best for you.

These courses are currently being developed. If you would like to hear when dates and booking become available, please register your interest.

Why train with Sea Fever Sailing?

Across our practical sailing courses, the same principles shape the way we teach.

You will have time to learn properly, plenty of opportunity to take an active role and calm, constructive support as your skills and confidence develop.

More time to learn properly

Learning takes time.

Our practical training courses run over six days, giving you space to practise, repeat skills and reflect on what you have learned. There is time to revisit something that has not quite clicked and try it again without feeling that the week is racing ahead of you.

Small groups. More active sailing.

Our practical training is delivered with a maximum ratio of three trainee skippers to one instructor.

That means more time at the helm, more opportunities to take responsibility and more individual feedback. You will be an active participant—not someone waiting quietly for their turn.

Training shaped around you

Every sailor arrives with a different combination of experience, knowledge, confidence and ambition.

Before your course, you will have a telephone or video call with a member of the Sea Fever Sailing team. This gives us the opportunity to understand what you would like to achieve, where you feel most and least confident, and what would make the training particularly valuable to you.

It helps us build on what you already know and give you the right balance of support, challenge and practical experience throughout your course.

Judgement—not box-ticking

Sailing rarely presents the same situation twice.

We place real emphasis on first principles, personal responsibility and understanding why something works. You will be encouraged to assess situations, make decisions and learn from the outcome.

Mistakes are part of learning. Our role is to create an environment in which you can make them safely, understand them and try again.

Calm, constructive instruction

People learn best when they feel able to ask questions, admit uncertainty and have another go.

You can expect patient explanations, honest feedback and a professional but relaxed atmosphere. We will challenge you, but we will never make you feel uncomfortable for not already knowing the answer.

An experience designed with care

Training can be demanding, but the experience around it matters too.

On our residential courses aboard Havana, you will be well looked after, with comfortable accommodation, prepared meals and a friendly onboard environment that allows you to concentrate on learning—and enjoy the week.

From Sailors, in their own words

"Donal’s vast experience was very reassuring for someone on their first sailing trip. The quality and presentation of the locally sourced food was outstanding ! Great fun."

William, October 2025

What matters most to us is how people feel when they leave the boat: more confident, more capable and clearer about what they need to do next.

Not sure where to start?

The right next step is not always the next certificate

You might have plenty of miles behind you but limited experience as a skipper. You may hold a qualification but feel that some of the skills have become rusty. Perhaps you are getting to know a new boat, returning to sailing after time away or trying to decide whether practical or theory training would help most.

Sailing experience rarely fits into tidy boxes—and you should not have to choose a course by guesswork.

Tell us where you are in your sailing, where you would like it to take you and anything that currently feels uncertain. We will listen and give you straightforward, practical advice about the training likely to be most useful.

That might be an RYA qualification, a Sea Fever Sailing development course, Own Boat Tuition or Theory Training. It may also mean consolidating what you already know before moving on.

The aim is to help you choose training that genuinely moves you forward—not to sell you a course that is not the right fit.
