RYA Courses

RYA Courses

After several years' running the RYA training programme for other companies in the Clyde, Sea Fever Sailing became an RYA recognised training centre in March 2026.

Our training boat is Havana, an excellent Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44i based at Largs Yacht Haven.

What's different about RYA courses with Sea Fever Sailing?

Over the years, we have identified ways in which the standard RYA course format can be improved for the benefit of the student, so we have incorporated these ideas into the Sea Fever programme.

With this in mind, we offer all of our RYA courses over 6 1/2 days, with a reduced student:instructor ratio, allowing for a greater depth of learning and more opportunity to get hands-on with all aspects of the syllabus.

We understand that your time is precious and we want you to leave us feeling that you've had a fantastic week's training and a great time!

Focused teaching...

Our student:instructor ratio is 3:1. If a cabin is shared and we have 4 students on the boat, the "extra" person must be crew, not a trainee skipper.

We offer modern touch screen chart plotter to ensure full application of digital navigation techniques

Modern comforts...

Clean, comfortable boat with bedding provided

Quality, prepared home-cooked food for easy preparation onboard. Dietary preferences catered for.

2 x single cabin

1 x double/twin cabin (only available to couples or friends/family - we don't ask strangers to share)

"Donal’s vast experience was very reassuring for someone on their first sailing trip. The quality and presentation of the locally sourced food was outstanding ! Great fun."

RYA Sail Cruising Courses

Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper are the fundamental development stages on your journey to Yachtmaster

Competent Crew

This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you will be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.

This course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.

Coastal Skipper

A course for those with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages under the guidance of the instructor.

During our RYA training courses, we provide quality, home-cooked meals designed to fuel long days on the water and keep energy levels high.

Expect hearty breakfasts, practical lunches and warming evening meals, prepared with care and, where possible, using locally sourced produce. Menus are planned to suit life afloat — nourishing, satisfying and well-timed around the training schedule.

Dietary requirements are catered for wherever possible; just let us know in advance.

Because when you’re focused on building skills and confidence, the last thing you should be worrying about is what’s for dinner.

Our RYA instruction courses run during September, October, March & April each year.

A guaranteed private cabin is £2000.

Our double cabin rate £3200 is based on two sharing, and our whole boat rate £6850 is for a maximum of four students.

Questions or concerns during your course?

We want every Sea Fever Sailing student to feel confident, supported, and exceptionally well cared for throughout their training experience. If anything is not as it should be, please raise it with your Skipper or Instructor first so we can try to resolve it quickly and informally. If needed, you can then follow our formal complaints procedure in writing. Complaints relating specifically to RYA training, course delivery, or the conduct of the Skipper or Instructor during the course may, after completion of our internal process, be referred to the RYA.

Read our full Complaints Procedure here.
